CODE NUMBERS
Most production carburetors from 1934 onward have a code number stamped either on the body or on a metal tag attached to the body, which identifies the car or truck and yearly model on which it is intended. In the 1930's this number was often stamped on the throttle body. Later carburetors - 1940's and up - have the number stamped on the top of float bowl. The code number has the form:
CCC-NNN
CCC is a one to three digit manufacturer code designating the manufacturer that the carburetor was built for, and NNN is a one to three digit number identiying the exact carburetor. Sometimes there is a letter after the numbers indicating an engineering change in production.
17-1
decodes as a carburetor for an Auburn (manufacturer code 17) and happens to be the first in sequence for this manufacturer.
23-108
decodes as a carburetor for a GMC truck (manufacturer code 23). Note that the 23- code was also used for Holden (Australia).
